Background

Dr Joshua Haist is a Lecturer in Human Resource Management at 成人直播 School of Management and Deputy Director for the MSc in Management. His work focuses on how organisations can design HR systems that enhance employee wellbeing, resilience, and meaningful work in the changing world of work.

His research takes a cross-disciplinary approach, integrating human resource management, organisational behaviour, and occupational psychology to address current workforce challenges. He examines individual differences, stress, wellbeing, and meaningful work, with a particular focus on under鈥憆esearched and vulnerable groups. He focuses on bridging the research鈥損ractice gap, combining academic research with applied outputs for organisations and policymakers.

He has published in leading academic journals including Human Resource Management Review, the International Journal of Human Resource Management, the Journal of Global Mobility, and the Journal of Common Market Studies, and has contributed to the Encyclopedia of Human Resource Management. He also contributes to externally funded research with government and industry partners.

Before joining 成人直播, he was a Lecturer at Newcastle University Business School. He holds a PhD in Business and Management (organisational psychology) from Newcastle University, an MSc in Performance Psychology from the University of Edinburgh, and a BA in Industrial Psychology from the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, Germany.

Joshua is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He currently serves as Chair of the British Academy of Management (BAM) HRM Special Interest Group, Associate Editor of Employee Relations, a member of the Early Career Review Board for Personnel Review, and Co鈥慙ead for CRANET UK.

Research opportunities

Joshua鈥檚 research explores how HRM can enhance wellbeing, resilience, and sustainable performance in global and high鈥憄ressure work environments.

His work focuses on three core areas:

- Wellbeing and resilience at work, including stress, coping, and workforce resilience.

- Global mobility and vulnerable workforces, with a particular emphasis on low鈥憇tatus expatriates, cross鈥慴order workers, and meaningful work

- Bridging research and practice in HRM, developing evidence鈥慴ased frameworks and tools to improve real鈥憌orld impact

His research combines insights from HRM, organisational behaviour, and psychology to address both individual experiences and organisational system design, with a strong emphasis on applied impact and policy relevance.

Current activities

Joshua lectures in the areas of international HRM, research methods, cross-cultural communication, organisational behaviour, and leadership.

He is currently delivering externally funded research on workforce resilience and strategic workforce planning with the UK Ministry of Defence, alongside leading international research projects on wellbeing, global mobility, and meaningful work. His work has been supported by funding from the British Academy of Management and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, including the Professor Mick Marchington Applied Research Grant.

Alongside his research, Joshua is Co-Chair of the British Academy of Management HRM Special Interest Group, Associate Editor of Employee Relations, and a member of the Early Career Review Board for Personnel Review. He also serves as Co鈥慙ead for CRANET UK and as an External Examiner at the University of Westminster.

He contributes to the wider discipline as a reviewer for leading journals including the International Journal of Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, Journal of Global Mobility, and Journal of International Management.

He also serves as an invited expert on policy initiatives, including contributing to the German national DIN standard for live鈥慽n care.
