Background
Rachael is a Reader in Applied Materials where her research to-date has been investigating the effects of extreme conditions on material behaviour specialising in novel materials, chemistries and biological systems.
More specifically, she is an expert in the material response to high pressure and variable temperature explosive and ballistic events. This has led to the majority of her research on armour systems and personal protective equipment characterising their behaviour experimentally and computationally. She is experienced in the derivation of material behaviour under dynamic shock compression as well as blast pressure and she frequently consults with both military and security personnel on the effects these states have on structures and materials.
Rachael won the 2025 Women in Engineering Awards 'Together We Engineer'
Rachael was shortlisted for the Women In Defence Awards 2022 in the Research and Innovation category
She was also selected as a Finalist, Top 50 Women in Engineering 2023: Safety and Security.
Rachael is the Founder and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) for the first 成人直播 Spin-out from 成人直播 Defence and Security (www.blastecoshield.co.uk). Blast EcoShield specialises in Nature Inspired Protective Engineering - designing living walls for blast mitigation protection, 'saving lives one leaf at a time'.
Blast EcoShield has been selected to be an exhibitor at the 2026 RHS Chelsea Flower Show as part of the GreenSTEM exhibit in the Great Pavilion (https://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-chelsea-flower-show/news/2026/greenstem)
Current activities
I currently lecture on the response of materials to impact events such as armour materials for vehicle and body armour to several courses on site. I also have an interest in the response of bio materials to impact events such as: tissue analogues, microbes and organic molecules.
