You are welcome to a day of learning about the latest research work of the 2025-26 MSc in Aviation Digital Technology Management cohort.

The two projects are:

Al and Data Analytics in Aviation Maintenance and Operations

Aircraft maintenance generates thousands of records every day, yet much of this information remains locked in unstructured reports and technical documents. While managing and harmonising such data is often treated as a technical challenge, the greater value for airlines lies in how insights from this data can improve operational efficiency and financial performance. This project develops an AI-driven Maintenance Analytics Framework that transforms historical aircraft maintenance records into predictive operational insights. By analysing past maintenance events, the framework identifies recurring failure patterns, anticipates potential component issues, and highlights operational trends that affect aircraft reliability. These insights support more effective maintenance planning, enabling airlines to reduce unscheduled aircraft downtime, optimise spare-parts inventory, and improve fleet utilisation. By shifting toward predictive maintenance strategies, airlines can lower maintenance costs, minimise delays and cancellations, and increase aircraft availability for revenue-generating operations. Ultimately, the framework converts historical maintenance data into strategic intelligence that helps airlines improve reliability, operational efficiency, and financial outcomes.

Technologies for MRO Hangar of the Future

Extended Turnaround Time in Heavy Maintenance represent significant losses in revenue. While manual visual inspections and paper-based workflows are common practices, they present a major opportunity for improvement. As an approach to the 'Hangar of the Future,’ this project demonstrates the integration of automated workflows and fixed-camera inspection systems into hangar operations, managed by a control room. By quantifying reductions in Manhours and Turnaround Time through research and a practical simulation at DARTeC, this directly addresses the industry labour shortage, whilst enhancing quality and safety assurance.
